2024 Virtual Syllabus - Songs from the Screen and More - Duets and Trios

Definition
Songs that were written for, or first appeared in, a movie or film.

General Rules
a) The selection must have been performed at the Local Festival, received a minimum mark of 85 and the recommendation of the local Adjudicator.
b) The original score of the music or purchased digital music with attached receipt showing title and price (not a cover page or subscription to a sharing website) for the selection must be shown on camera prior to the beginning of the performance.
c) Memorization is required. 
d) Two (2) simple handheld props (e.g. comb, basket or book); one (1) standard rehearsal theatre box, one table and one chair are allowed. No other props will be permitted. 
e) Costumes are allowed, but will not be judged. 
f) Stage movement is allowed.
g) Dance breaks are not allowed and cannot be added to the selection.
h) All competitors must be an amateur which shall be defined as a music student, performer, or any person who does not earn significant income from performance or teaching in the discipline in which they are participating or, is a member of a professional union. i) For the purpose of this competition:
• Adult and Child Duets: Adult is defined as anyone over the age of 19, performing with a younger child
• Teacher and Child Duets: Teacher is defined as anyone who is a music teacher (this would include parents/grandparents)
j) All criteria listed in the OMFA General Rules (omfa.ca/virtual-festival/rules-regulations must be strictly adhered to.

Song Selections
a) Only one selection is required. The Adjudicator will take song choice into consideration.
b) Spoken passages are only allowed if published in the score being used and cannot represent more than 10% of the selection.
c) Competitors are allowed to transpose music higher or lower, but the integrity of the composer's intention with respect to the character must be observed. 
d) Selections should be age/culturally appropriate and suitable for all audiences.
e) OMFA reserves the right to reject any selections that are deemed inappropriate, either in style or content.

Songs from the Screen and More Chart

Accompaniment
a) Accompaniment must be with acoustic piano – live or recorded. 
b) If you do not have a collaborative pianist (accompanist), the people on this list (omfa.ca/collaborative-pianists-accompanists) have indicated that they are willing to play and record your selections for the virtual festival. It is the competitor's responsibility to contact the collaborative pianist directly and negotiate a fee for their service.

Selections Permitted
a) Songs that were written for, or first appeared in, a movie or film (eg.Titanic).
b) Duet/trio arrangements of songs from animated films, anime, movies or television shows/series.
c) Duet/trio arrangements of songs from film musicals - singers must use film version arrangement (eg. 'Santa Fe', Newsies; 'Breaking Free', High School Musical; 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow', The Wizard of Oz)
d) Duet/trio arrangements of songs from musicals that have only been workshopped (not fully staged).
e) Duet/trio arrangements of songs written for, but have been cut, from staged musicals (eg. 'More to the Story', Shrek, The Musical; 'Crossing a Bridge', Anastasia)
f) Duets (eg. 'I See the Light', Tangled; 'Shallow', A Star is Born; 'A Whole New World', Aladdin)
g) Verses can be cut in songs that have more than 3 verses.

Selections NOT Permitted
a) Songs listed in the RCM or CC classical syllabi (Lists A, B, C from Levels 7-10).
b) Songs that were originally written for live fully staged musicals and that were later made into movies (eg. The Sound of Music; West Side Story; My Fair Lady; Hamilton; In the Heights; Dear Evan Hansen; Wicked).
c) Operetta/light opera selections (eg. Gilbert & Sullivan, Romberg, Lehar, Johann Strauss)
d) Selections that are primarily spoken patter.
e) Songs that were originally released as a commercial pop song and are later used in a jukebox musical should be entered in Popular Voice (eg. Moulin Rouge, Mamma Mia, Beautiful, &Juliet).
f) Selections from Junior show versions of musicals that have been cut or simplified.
g) Vocal cuts, except for repeated choruses.

Video Submissions Requirements
a) Videos must be submitted by your Local Festival's entry deadline date for Provincials.
b) One original score of the music or purchased digital music with attached receipt for the selection must be shown on camera prior to the beginning of the performance.
c) Only YouTube videos will be permitted (i.e. google drives, vimeo, mp3's, mp4's, dropbox etc. are not permitted). Each performance requires a separate YouTube link. Performance videos should not be combined.
d) All videos must have YouTube settings turned off. You may choose to have your video unlisted but private videos are not permitted. Please also ensure that the video is allowed to be embedded in other programs.
e) The video must clearly show your face, your body and hands. A stationary camera position must be used throughout.
f) The video should be in the spirit of a recital or an audition and therefore you should dress appropriately.
g) You are required to introduce yourselves and your selection in the video, either verbally or with a title card before each piece and must be limited to the following:
• your names
• the age level you have entered (competitors must enter the category that
matches the oldest age of the competitors)
• the composer's name, complete title of your selection, name of film (prior to
each piece).
h) Do not announce your teacher's name, where you are from or at which local festival you performed. Do not use your teacher's YouTube channel to submit your videos.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

Competitors are required to sing one selection only.

Competitors must enter the category that matches the oldest level of the competitors.

The maximum performance times for each level are listed below:

Beginner Levels (Ages 6-8): Ten (10) minutes

Primary Levels (Ages 9-10): Ten (10) minutes

Elementary Levels (Ages 11-12): Ten (10) minutes

Junior Levels (Ages 13-14): Fifteen (15) minutes

Intermediate Levels (Ages 15-16): Fifteen (15) minutes

Senior Levels (Ages 17-18): Twenty (20) minutes

Amateur Adults (Ages 29 and Above): Ten (10) minutes

Adult & Child: Ten (10) minutes

Teacher & Child: Ten (10) minutes

There is no minimum performance time.

Accurate performance times must be included on the entry form. Do not guess timings.

If you do not provide all information required (your YouTube video link, the PDF of your music and payment) by your Festival's Provincial deadline, it will result in disqualification. "To Be Decided" in any field will not be accepted and will also result in disqualification.
 
The only exception to this is the field labelled "Movement/Musical".  If your piece is a sonata or a concerto, etc. you will need to define which movements you will be playing.  If your piece does not have any movements please put "none".
