2025 Virtual Syllabus - Original Composition without performance video

Composition refers to creating an original piece or work of music, either vocal or instrumental and refers to the structure of a musical piece or to the process of creating or writing a new piece of music.

General Rules
a) All competitors must be an amateur which shall be defined as any person whose principle means of livelihood is not obtained from the performance or teaching of music in the particular category in which they are competing, even though, from time to time, they may receive remuneration on an occasional basis (not full-time). b) All criteria listed in the OMFA General Rules (omfa.ca/virtual-festival/rules-regulations) must be strictly adhered to.

Composition Requirements
c) Only one composition is may be submitted.
d) Compositions are not performed in this category.
e) Original music for solo instrument with or without accompaniment or Original music for ensemble.
f) Pop compositions are not permitted in this category.
g) Scores must be clear and legible. The beginning of each line must have a bar number. Scores must be received via email to mail@omfa.ca by the competitor's deadline. Entrants are advised to keep a copy.
h) Please note: Teacher assistance in scoring is not permitted.
i) A competitor's composition will be adjudicated on originality and competence in handling form, harmony, melody and rhythm.

Original Composition - Solo or Ensemble

COMPOSITION REQUIREMENTS

Compositions are not performed in this category.

The maximum time limit for Original Composition for Solos and Ensembles are listed below:

Beginner (Ages 6-8): Five (5) minutes
Primary (Ages 9-10): Five (5) minutes
Elementary (Ages 11-12): Five (5) minutes
Junior Level (Ages 13-14): Ten (10) minutes
Intermediate Level (Ages 15-16): Ten (10) minutes
Senior Level (Ages 17-18): Fifteen (15) minutes
Advanced Level (Ages 19-28): Fifteen (15) minutes
Adults (Ages 29 and Above): Fifteen (15) minutes

There is no minimum time.

If you do not provide all information required (the PDF of your music and payment) by your Festival's Provincial deadline, it will result in disqualification. "To Be Decided" in any field will not be accepted and will also result in disqualification.
