Kate Bevan-Baker

Newfoundland-born Kate Bevan-Baker is a dynamic fiddler, classical violinist, and singer whose musical journey spans a range of genres from Celtic and jazz to classical. Her artistry has earned her a Prix Opus for her performance of Baratin d'Marins with La Nef (Traditional Quebecois Concert of the Year, 2022) and three Canadian Folk Music Award nominations. A passionate educator, Kate is a part-time professor at Concordia and McGill Universities.

A violinist since the age of four, Kate's deep musical versatility is rooted in her formal training. She holds classical violin performance degrees from Memorial and McGill Universities, a Graduate Certificate in University Teaching, and a PhD focused on Irish music from Concordia University. Her performance career has taken her across North America, Europe, Russia, and China, performing with various ensembles and orchestras.

Kate's accolades include national and international performances, recordings, presentations, and lectures. She has been nominated for Canadian Folk Music Awards in the Instrumental Group of the Year category (Bù€marang, Archetype Trad) in 2022 and 2024, and for Vocal Group of the Year for the 2025 awards. Kate continues to make her mark on the folk and classical music scenes alike. Whether on stage or in the classroom, Kate's passion for music is matched only by her dedication to inspiring the next generation of musicians.

Kate is based in Montreal where she performs with many ensembles including La Nef, Ensemble Telemann, Voces Boreales, VB8, Choeur Adleisia, and the Orchestra of the Grands Ballets Canadiens. She balances an active performance and teaching career and is currently a member of several Celtic trios (Gairloch, Bù€marang, Solstice) and the fiddle duo, Archetype Trad.
