Michelle Lau holds both Undergraduate and Master's degrees in Piano Performance and Literature from Western University, where she was awarded the prestigious Dr. Sherwood Fox Music Fellowship for excellence in performance. She has performed as a soloist and collaborative pianist across Ontario and in France, and has studied with esteemed pedagogues such as Dianne Werner, Jean-Paul Sevilla, Jean-François Latour, and Madeline Bruser.
As seasoned educator with over 15 years of teaching experience, Michelle is also a registered teacher and examiner with the Royal Conservatory of Music. Her teaching combines technical precision with a creative, holistic approach—integrating imagination, critical thinking, and performance psychology to nurture expressive and confident musicians. Her expertise as an educator has given her many opportunities, such as teaching in high school environments as a conductor, presenting masterclasses, and teaching musicianship skills at the University of Western Ontario.
Michelle is the founder of theOpenScore, an digital educational resource for musicians of all levels. Her work includes educational videos, blogs, and podcasts that have grown a social media following of nearly 50,000 on Instagram, Tiktok, and Youtube. theOpenScore aims to foster a healthy musician community while providing information on performance wellness, piano technique, practice tips, and artistry. As a result of her reach, she has collaborated with brands such as Henle, Soundbrenner, Tonebase, and Minnuedo.
